Josh is the son of a dear friend and I had the privilege of buying him his first Crave burger when he and his brother helped move furniture for a single mom a few summers ago. Actually, helped is the wrong word — they did all the work and I just fed them afterwards.
Kristen I met for the first time in the Target parking lot the day of our session, and I adored her the second we said hello. After spending 45 minutes in the car with her during rush hour traffic, I knew exactly why Josh wanted to marry her.
As we drove, I got to hear about how they met the first time, in youth group. And then I heard how they ran into each other in Starbucks a few years later. Kristen’s first thought was how handsome Josh was — super handsome, in fact.
I also found out about their first dates, meeting each other’s families, and holding hands.
I learned that Josh and Kristen’s first kiss with each other was their first kiss ever!
I also got to hear Josh’s proposal to Kristen at Red Rocks. With hot chocolate. At sunrise.
Kristen was standing up, because every woman needs to be standing for her marriage proposal. Getting Kristen to stand up was a bit of a challenge, though, for two reasons. First, she was exhausted and didn’t want to. (I would be too after getting up at 3 in the morning!) Second, Kristen is so sweet she didn’t want to block anyone’s view of the sunrise.
When Kristen thinks back to that day, she says the thing she’ll remember most is how surprised she was. Kristen is not easily surprised, though, so a truly surprise proposal just goes to show you how much Josh knows and loves Kristen!
As they shared with me their heart for God, for marriage, and for others, I could not help thinking that I could learn so much just from watching how these two live out their faith.
Josh and Kristen, as Paul says in 1 Timothy 4:12, don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. Your marriage is going to be such a beautiful picture of Christ and his bride, and I can’t wait to see what God has in store!
