Talk about a proposal to end all proposals! Janelle had no idea what was coming when she went with her family to this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Denver, one of the largest in the country.

For the past two years, she and Adam had attended the parade to celebrate their shared Irish heritage, but this was the first year that Adam was going to get to walk in the parade as a Denver firefighter.

Little did Janelle know that when she invited all of her friends and family to see Adam, she was actually inviting them to her own surprise marriage proposal! Janelle and her family arrived early to scout out what she thought was going to be the perfect vantage point for taking photos of Adam.

What she didn’t know was that her family was carefully choosing a location that would be easy for Adam to identify, so he’d know exactly where to find Janelle in the midst of all the crowds when he went by — the blue door on Blake Street.    Janelle’s family and friends kept her completely in the dark — she had no idea what was about to take place.

Even with all the stop-and-go of marching bands and dancing leprechauns and Irish-themed floats that is typical of any parade, Janelle didn’t even think it was strange that Adam’s firetruck stopped right in front of her on the street! One of Janelle’s friends diverted her attention away from the truck for a moment, so Adam could bypass the barrier separating the crowd from the parade.

When she turned around, he was down on one knee, proposing to his future bride in front of their families and closest friends … along with hundreds of fellow parade-goers and, of course, the Denver Fire Department.

After Janelle said yes, they boarded the antique fire truck and rode through the rest of the parade together. Janelle finally realized her friends and family had been in on the whole thing … and she was in such a state of surprise that at the end of the parade she had to stop and ask Adam if she had indeed actually said yes.

Not only do Adam and Janelle both have a background in emergency medicine, but they share many of the same interests outside of work too.

What do they most enjoy doing together? “It is probably a tie between camping/hiking and going for ice cream.”

They also bring along a third camper, Boomer, their sweet Corgi who loves to go everywhere his owners do. Their favorite place to camp has been the Olympic Forest in Washington, which was part of a road trip — with Boomer, of course — to Yellowstone, Coeur d’Alene, Seattle, the Olympic Forest, and Portland.

It is so beautiful to see the love and respect these two have for each other.

What is something she respects and admires about him?

“Adam has one of the strongest senses of passion and devotion for the things he loves that I’ve ever seen. He has the ability to bring a sense of calm to stressful situations. Above all else, he supports me in every aspect of life and has always taken me exactly as I am.”

What is something he loves and treasures about her?

“Janelle supports me in what I do and understands my passions, as well as stays steadfast in my corner, even if it’s to tell me that I’m in the wrong. She never turns against me.”What are they most excited about on their wedding day? “We are most looking forward to committing ourselves to each other in front of our friends an family, and beginning our lives together as husband and wife! Oh … and Red Velvet cake!”

Ice cream and red velvet cake?? These two are truly a couple after my own heart, and so perfectly suited for each other! Cannot wait to share photos of their wedding day.

You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful spring day for Caitlin and Ross’s intimate Colorado mountain wedding at Blackstone Rivers Ranch. There was a little bit of snow still left on the ground from the week before, but it only made the mountains more beautiful for photos.

And I’m pretty sure I have never seen two people more excited for their wedding — in part, I think, because it meant that they would get to see each other every day — no more long distance dating.
Ross and Caitlin had a whirlwind wedding weekend, with an intimate mountain wedding on Friday, followed by an after-party open house for all of their friends Saturday. On Sunday they were hitting the road to move to Kansas, and on Monday Ross started a new job! “We are just so thankful to be able to share all these new experiences together and grow together in our trust in the Lord and His perfect plan for us,” says Caitlin.

Ross and Caitlin’s wedding was all about details — they were very intentional in all that they did. From the small number of guests and family present, to Caitlin’s grandmother making the bouquets, to Caitlin’s grandfather reading Scripture during the ceremony — every detail was well thought out and intentional.

I asked these two what they both wanted most to remember about their wedding day, and Caitlin said it was the look on Ross’s face when he first saw her walking toward him — it was pure love and adoration. And right before she walked down the aisle, she remembers feeling overjoyed that it was finally time to become Ross’s wife. “I couldn’t wait to see him and have him see me.” Ross described the incredible feeling of walking back down the aisle as a married couple — something he never wants to forget.

I am so blessed to know Caitlin and Ross, to have been able to document their wedding day, and to call them my friends. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for them in their new life together!

Aw, thank you, Mai! We had such a beautiful venue, a beautiful day, and of course a beautiful couple!ReplyCancel

One of the first things you’ll notice about Jessica is her quiet beauty, her sweet and gentle spirit, and her smiling eyes that immediately make you feel like you’ve known her for half your life. Which, if you are Michael, you have.

You’ll also quickly find out she loves all things Disney, so when you find out Michael does too, you know this is a match made in heaven.

If you get the idea from their engagement session portraits that Jessica likes pink, you’d be correct.  And she doesn’t simply like pink — she really loooves pink!! She wears it a lot. In fact, she wears it every day!

So when Michael showed up at her house one evening wearing a pink shirt, with a dozen pink roses in hand, Jessica was slightly suspicious he might be up to something.

On their way to dinner, Michael stopped at Hudson Gardens (cue memorable Disney music here) and led Jessica to the Rose Garden, where he proposed. Jessica, of course, said yes.

It sounds so romantic, but in real life, as in Disney, getting to this moment  actually took a very long time.

Jessica and Michael had known each other for years — half a lifetime, actually — before they began dating.

They first met in junior high, and then became close friends throughout high school and college.

They knew each other’s personalities, hopes and dreams, and even families long before they ever decided to take the next step, which didn’t happen until they began pursuing their own professions in different states.
One weekend when Michael visited Jessica in Florida, he expressed his intentions to date her. Jessica was hesitant, however, and didn’t respond.

So in true Disney fashion, Michael pursued Jessica with song — sending her a song every day for four months.

After Michael bought Jessica dinner at a romantic restaurant on the ocean and they spent a magical day at Disney World, Jessica finally agreed to take the next step in their relationship.

Their first official date included dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and — wait for it! — watching Cinderella together.

When I asked Jessica what she most admires about Michael, she told me this:

“I love that he is an extremely hard worker and is committed to excellence. He is such a romantic and loves fairytales! He’s sweet and shows me how much he loves me constantly.

“I love that Michael sings his heart out whenever a song pops into his head. Most of all, I admire his strong love for God and his desire to be more like Christ every day.”
And Michael says this about Jessica:

“I love her heart for the Lord and her strong desire to be the face of Christ to everyone she comes in contact with. I love that she complements me well in many areas of my life. I love her kind-hearted spirit.

“I love that she laughs at my jokes and puts up with me no matter what. I love that I get to call her mine for the rest of my life.”

If you can’t tell by their sweet words, both Jessica and Michael are such romantics at heart, with a shared love of adventure and, of course, Disney classics.

In fact, as soon as our session was over, they told me they were planning to see Beauty and the Beast at least one more time — maybe more. And I have a feeling there will be many more Disney dates to follow….

You know it’s going to be a good day when you are awake before the sun comes up for a morning wedding at the gorgeous Sanctuary Golf Club. Add a sweet, faith-filled bride and groom, their beautiful families, and the most joyful bridal party, and you have a day that even this wedding photographer will never forget.

Speaking of morning weddings, is there a better way to treat your guests? Seriously, who doesn’t want breakfast for every meal? Omelettes cooked to order, coffee, and a mimosa bar, and … did someone say WAFFLES for a wedding!?? Oh my word — I think breakfast receptions need to be a new thing!

Plus, dancing in the afternoon is always a good idea. Especially when the light at the Sanctuary is absolutely glorious … and when the couple chooses Ed Sheeran for their first dance. Wedding days truly don’t get much more joyful — or beautiful — than this!

Oh, and in case you are expecting to see the usual wedding photos here, get ready for a little change of pace. I second shot this wedding for the lovely Genevieve of Genevieve Hanson Photography, so as a second shooter, my focus was on capturing the quiet details of the day and the emotions during those in-between moments.

If you enjoy these photos, be sure to check out Genevieve’s full blog post here. Thank you, Genevieve, for having me along for this beautiful day! I absolutely adore you and it was such a joy to serve this couple on their wedding day!

Alec and Heather met freshman year at CSU in the dorms. Their roommates and best friends were friends, so they kept running into each other. Eventually they started dating, which, if you remember college at all, actually means visiting the dining hall together.

After a few months of dining hall dating, Heather told Alec that wasn’t quite working for her anymore. Alec took the not-so-subtle hint and planned a special night out — dinner and a movie.

On the day of their first “real” date, his car quit working, so, being the chivalrous type, Alec borrowed a friend’s car rather than cancel their date. They had a wonderful time, and dinner off campus and a movie beat out the dining hall, at least as far as dates go.

Alec walked Heather to class every single morning, and they stopped almost daily for blueberry muffins and smoothies. It was one of those mornings over blueberry muffins that Alec knew he was going to marry Heather. When he told her, she was skeptical. But of course he was absolutely right.

Heather visited Alec’s house in Montrose for Thanksgiving last year, and that’s when the two of them decided to go “just look” at rings. Heather tried on 20 or so, and narrowed those down to a couple she really liked. Later that day, Alec went back to the store to pick out the one.

Then he flew to Heather’s hometown in Illinois to ask permission from her dad to marry her!

The very next weekend, Heather and Alec went to Estes Park, and he proposed at Sprague Lake. It wasn’t exactly a surprise, Heather told me. She knew Alec would ask that weekend because he can’t keep a secret — especially not one as big as that!

Not being able to keep secrets is only part of what makes Alec so endearing to Heather. She also adores how goofy he is when sings and dances around the house. Which is all. the. time. And Alec adores when Heather gets her crooked smile and how she has not one but two dimples on the side of one cheek.

Heather has loved everything about wedding planning, and the two of them are looking forward to spending the most special day of their lives in Estes Park, surrounded by all of their closest family and friends.
